Created in the early 1990s as an alternative to the more expensive Swiss cheese Emmenthal, Maasdamer is made in the classic ‘eye’ cheese style, similar to the Norwegian Jarlsberg. The name comes from the River Maas which runs through Holland.

It is a boulder-shaped, semi-hard cheese made from cow's milk. Its smooth, natural rind is polished and may also be waxed. Although it shows similarities to Emmenthal, Maasdamer is higher in moisture and therefore more supple and creamier. The cheese has a sweet and buttery flavour with a fruity background.
